Right close to them, a sandbag was hit by a grenade. He jumped onto the grenade without thinking. Carpenter had delayed his
shattered his face, severed major arteries, broke his right arm, crushed a lung, left entry and exit wounds in his head, left him haemorrhaging behind a column of grey smoke.
Over 40 procedures and 5 weeks in a coma would be required over the course of the following 3 years for him.
Carpenter received the Medal of Honor from President Obama in 2014.
