 When Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was tapped to pilot the Soyuz I mission on April 23, 1967, he knew he might not come back alive.

Not only was space travel itself new, but Komarov's spacecraft was also quite rushed — and may have even experienced issues during the testing period. But at the height of the space race, Soviets like him were under tremendous pressure to succeed for their country.

Tragically, Komarov's mission failed — and he became the first man to die in spaceflight. And when the Soviets recovered his corpse........
