silver stein spent 36 years in solitary confinement

who spent his last 42 years in jail

American criminal Silverstein (February 4, 1952 - May 11, 2019) spent the last 42 years of his life behind bars after being found guilty of four different murders while incarcerated for armed robbery, one of which was later overturned. [2] Following the murder of Corrections Officer Merle Clutts at the Marion Penitentiary in Illinois, Silverstein spent the final 36 years of his life in solitary confinement. He was a former commander of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang and a vicious killer, according to the prison administration.

Silverstein stated that the three murders he committed were motivated in part by the inhumane conditions in the prison system. He was housed at the ADX Florence federal prison in Colorado "in a specially built cell" in a section known as "Range 13." At the time of his passing, he was the prisoner who had been detained in solitary confinement for the longest by the Bureau of Prisons. [4] Out of respect for Clutts, a large number of jail staff declined to speak with Silverstein.
