She was taken prisoner while defending the Anhui province town of Hexian from a Japanese attack. In the same conflict, her husband Liu Zhiyi () also lost his life. After capturing this picture, she was executed by a bayonet shortly after being repeatedly raped by gangs of Japanese soldiers while being held captive.
Despite the fact that she and her husband were childless, the Chinese people still see them as martyrs.
