A Trip Down Deep into Planet Earth 


Can you imagine taking a trip all the way to the center of the Earth? It would be an adventure into places so hot and squeezed tight that your mind can hardly picture it. First, we go through the thin crust on the outside of the Earth. This is the crust, a thin "skin" that forms the land and sea floors. Here there is hard granite rock in the continents and dark basalt rock in the oceans. The crust is where earthquakes and volcanoes happen because of the energy moving around inside our planet.


Then we go deeper into the mantle, a huge area made of melted rock. This is the middle part of Earth, like its heart. In the mantle there is hot liquid rock full of iron and magnesium. The asthenosphere layer here is soft and lets the big plates under the continents and oceans shift around, changing land and sea over long periods of time. Now we reach the outer core, a place so hot it is like liquid metal. In this swirling ocean of iron and nickel our planet's magnetic field is created. It's like Earth has a giant battery powered by the spinning and currents in the core. This magnetic field protects us from harmful rays from the Sun. 


At last, we come to the inner core, the very center of Earth. It is solid iron and nickel even hotter than the Sun's surface! Here the pressure is more than anything we can imagine, squeezing even the toughest elements.

Though we can never really take this journey, thinking about it helps us understand our complex planet. Geology lets us learn about what is hidden underground, and shows that Earth is always changing over huge amounts of time. It is alive like a living thing, evolving and morphing constantly.
