Facing Monkeypox with Care

A Community's Guide to Compassion and Caution

Friends, I understand there has been a lot of concern recently about this illness called monkeypox that has been in the press. Allow me to share what I've learnt in a way that makes us feel less fearful.https://a.co/d/eSUXqohv

It starts with monkeys in the jungle, where this virus was first spotted - but don't blame the poor monkeys. Scientists believe it's really the rats who pass it around in their homes. When it jumps to people in the village, it can feel like a bad flu at first. But then comes the scary part - a rash starts to spread. I can only imagine how frightening it must be to see spots appearing all over. https://a.co/d/fT6eLjy

The good news is that it is not as contagious as other germs. Nonetheless, we must all be diligent in protecting ourselves and our loved ones. When our neighbor's daughter fell ill last month, I didn't visit or touch her things directly until she was feeling better. It's tough to avoid someone we care for when they need comfort. But knowing I didn't catch it and pass it on helps me sleep at night.

My friend, health challenges will keep coming our way. But as long as we face them together, sharing what we learn along the way, the fear can't divide us. Our community will get through this too, with compassion for all.
