When did Hitler come to the realisation that the fight with the Allies was lost?
Some accounts claim that Hitler was aware the war was lost militarily as early as August 1944. Hitler allegedly informed German fighter ace Erich Hartmann in August 1944 that although the war had been declared militarily lost, the anti-German alliance, which included communists and capitalists, was so weak that it would eventually crumble due to internal inconsistencies. Germany only needed to maintain its resolve until that time to at least end the war with a diplomatic settlement.
